Wilmington is a genuinely good date night city. It has the walkable downtown, the waterfront, the restaurant scene, and the kind of evening light that makes everything look better than it has any right to. Whether you are trying to impress someone new, celebrate an anniversary, or just break the takeout-and-streaming cycle with your partner, this guide covers every tier — from a ten-dollar evening to a two-hundred-dollar one.
$ — Great Date, Low Spend
You do not need to drop serious money to have a memorable night in Wilmington. Some of the best date moves in this city are free or close to it.
Sunset Riverwalk Stroll
Start at the north end of the Riverwalk near the convention center and walk south through downtown along the Cape Fear River. The light between 7 and 8:30 p.m. in summer is absurd — the river catches the sky, the battleship lights up across the water, and the downtown brick buildings glow. It is free, it is beautiful, and it is right there. Stop at one of the benches near the City Club if you want to sit and watch the light change. Our guide to Wilmington sunset spots has more on timing and locations.
Moonlit Beach Walk at Wrightsville
After dark, Wrightsville Beach empties out and the beach becomes one of the quietest places in the county. Walk south from the public access near the Holiday Inn toward the jetty — on a clear night with a moon, the light on the water is something. Parking is free after hours at most lots. Bring a blanket, bring a bottle of something, and you have a date night that beats most restaurant experiences. Best on a full or near-full moon when the tide is low enough for firm sand.
Fourth Friday Gallery Walk
On the fourth Friday of each month, 15 to 20 downtown galleries stay open from 6 to 9 p.m. with free admission. You walk gallery to gallery at your own pace, most offer wine or snacks, and the whole thing is free. It is art, it is walkable, it is social without being loud, and it requires zero planning beyond showing up. After the galleries close, you are already downtown and everything is within walking distance. A legitimately good date that costs nothing.
Comedy at Dead Crow
Dead Crow Comedy Room on Dock Street is Wilmington's dedicated comedy club. They book a mix of touring comedians and local acts, and ticket prices are usually reasonable — typically $10 to $25 depending on the headliner. It is intimate (the room is small), the drinks are normal bar prices, and laughing with someone is an underrated date move. Check their calendar ahead of time; weekends book up.
$$ — Solid Night Out
Mid-range in Wilmington means a good dinner, a drink or two, and something to do before or after — without the kind of bill that makes you wince.
Dinner at Circa 1922
Circa 1922 is a tapas and cocktail bar on Princess Street, set in the ground floor of a 1920s building with exposed brick, low lighting, and the kind of atmosphere that does a lot of the work for you. The tapas plates are designed for sharing, which is inherently more date-friendly than two entrees and a dividing line down the table. The cocktail menu is strong — they take the drinks seriously without making it a lecture. Expect to spend $50 to $80 for two people with drinks.
Dinner at rx
rx on Front Street is one of the best restaurants in Wilmington, full stop. The menu changes with the season, the sourcing is local and intentional, and the cooking is precise without being fussy. It is a small room — maybe 40 seats — which makes the experience feel personal rather than performative. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on weekends. Expect $60 to $100 for two with drinks. The wine list is one of the more thoughtful ones in the city.
Rooftop Drinks
Wilmington's rooftop bar scene is small but worth knowing about. The rooftop at the Embassy Suites on the Riverwalk has views directly over the river and the battleship — it is technically a hotel bar, but it is open to the public and the sunset views are among the best in the city. The Reel Cafe rooftop on Front Street is another option — more casual, but elevated above the street noise with decent cocktails.
Combine rooftop drinks with a Riverwalk stroll and dinner downtown and you have a three-part evening that feels intentional without requiring a spreadsheet to coordinate.
Dessert at Kilwins
Kilwins on Front Street is an ice cream and chocolate shop in the heart of downtown. It is not a quiet, romantic, candlelit experience — it is a cheerful shop full of fudge and waffle cones and people who are having a good time. And that is exactly the right energy for the end of a date night. Get two scoops, walk down to the Riverwalk, sit on a bench. Simple, good, memorable. The caramel corn is also excellent if you are a savory-sweet person.
$$$ — Special Occasion
When you want the night to feel significant, Wilmington has restaurants and experiences that deliver.
Dinner at Manna
Manna on Princess Street is the fine dining benchmark in Wilmington. The kitchen does modern American cuisine with a focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and the execution is consistently at a level that most cities this size don't have. The tasting menu is the way to go if you want the full experience — it lets the kitchen show what they can do. The wine pairings are well-matched. The service is polished without being stiff. Expect $120 to $200 for two with wine. Reservations are essential.
Dinner at Seabird
Seabird on South Front Street is the other top-tier dinner option. It is seafood-focused — not fried-seafood-shack focused, but the kind of refined coastal cooking where every ingredient earns its spot on the plate. The raw bar is excellent, the whole-fish preparations are worth ordering, and the cocktail program is one of the best in the city. The space is bright and modern, which gives it a different feel from Manna's warmer, more intimate room. Expect $100 to $180 for two with drinks. Reservations strongly recommended.
Sunset Cruise
Several companies run sunset cruises on the Cape Fear River out of downtown Wilmington. The Wilmington Water Tours and Cape Fear Riverboats both offer evening cruises that time the route to catch sunset over the river. Most include a cash bar; some offer dinner or heavy appetizers. The cruise itself is usually 60 to 90 minutes. It is a particularly good move for a special occasion — there is something about being on the water at sunset with someone that restaurants cannot replicate, no matter how good the food is.
After Dinner: Moonlit Walk or a Nightcap
After a $$$-tier dinner, you don't need another activity — you need the right ending. Options:
- Walk the Riverwalk after dark. The downtown lights, the battleship illuminated across the river, the quiet that settles over the waterfront after 9 p.m. — it is the right coda for a big evening.
- Nightcap at Circa 1922. If you did not eat there, end there. A cocktail in a low-lit room with good music is a clean finish.
- Drive to Wrightsville for the beach. Twenty minutes from downtown to the sand. Late at night, the beach is empty and the stars are out. Bring a blanket.
Date Night Builds
Three complete evenings, assembled:
- The $30 date: Fourth Friday gallery walk (free) into Kilwins for dessert ($10) into Riverwalk sunset ($0). Total: under $15 plus whatever you snack on.
- The $100 date: Rooftop drinks at the Embassy Suites ($20) into dinner at Circa 1922 ($70) into a Riverwalk walk ($0). Total: around $90 to $100.
- The $250 date: Sunset cruise ($50 to $80 per person) into dinner at Manna ($150+) into a nightcap at Circa 1922 ($20). Total: $220 to $280. Worth it for the right occasion.
A Few Tips
- Make reservations. Manna, Seabird, and rx book up on weekends. Do not wing it for the nicer places.
- Parking downtown is easy. Metered street parking is free after 6:30 p.m. and on Sundays. The city deck on Second Street is paid but rarely full in the evening.
- Wednesday and Thursday dates are underrated. The best restaurants are quieter mid-week, service is better, and you feel like you have the place to yourself.
- Summer sunsets are late. If you are building around sunset, plan for 8 to 8:30 p.m. in June and July. That means dinner after the walk, not before.
Wilmington makes date night easy. The downtown is compact, the waterfront is right there, and the restaurant quality punches well above what you would expect from a city of 125,000. Put in five minutes of planning and the city does the rest.
